Shakira banks on charity

Latina pop star Shakira met with the World Bank last week to kick off a $300 million charity initiative.

Who knew the songstress was such an advocate for children's education? There's nothing better than a hottie with a heart. But is she genuine?

Shakira first met with US President Barack Obama at the White House. Lucky lady! Then she moved onto a staged town hall meeting in Washington D.C with World Bank President Robert Zoellick to sign a partnership to provide
$300 million worth of funding to improving the development of children in Latin America and the Caribbean. It's called The Early Childhood Initative.

Believe it or not, she wasn't just there to take advantage of the photo op. (Although, she did look gorgeous!)

Check out the photos here.

Shakira has
opened a school in her home town of Barranquilla and also claims to have worked with many hopeless children, providing them with an education.

She then popped over to the Hard Rock Café where she sold her merch and promised to give a portion to charity. She better, or this whole thing could blow up in her face.

What do you think of Shakira's charitable efforts? Is she a good person or a good promoter?

NYC: The Row

It was inevitable that I would like The Row's A/W 2010 collection.

It's the first time that Mary-Kate and Ashley have shown their collection at New York Fashion Week, and I liked the collection. It played to that luxe 90's vibe that Ashley is so into, and reminds me of Calvin Klein, Jil Sander and Helmut Lang.

There weren't any pieces that were out-of-this-world exciting, but The Row is about timeless, well-made wardrobe basics. And they do it well.

BAFTA Awards 2010

I had quite high hopes for the BAFTA red carpet, especially for Carey Mulligan, but in actual fact, the red carpet dresses last night were pretty average. I didn't notice anyone who had got it totally wrong, so I guess that's a good thing. But there was little to nothing that made me really go wow. Normally you can expect a great Thandie Newton appearance at the BAFTA Awards, but it looked like she stayed home last night. Here are some of the women who were on the red carpet:

bafta01
Best Dressed: Kate Winslet in Stella McCartney and Audrey Tautou in Lanvin
These two were definitely the best dressed of the night. Kate looked really elegant in the black Stella dress, I think it is one of her best red carpet looks ever. And it's impossible to dislike Audrey or Lanvin - so put them together and you have a winning look.

bafta02
Second Best Dressed: Carey Mulligan in Vionnet and Anna Kendrick in Pucci
This floral printed Vionnet was not what I expected to see Carey in at all, and I think it worked rather well. Anna's Pucci dress was also unexpected. I think Carey was the better dressed of the pair but they both made interesting choices.

bafta3
Coming in Third: Kristen Stewart in Chanel Couture and Claire Danes in Burberry
I don't understand the fuss surrounding Robert or Kristen. Last night he looked beyond gross with the dirtiest hair I've ever seen on live TV and Kristen looked so grumpy. And Claire Danes looked pretty in Burberry, but it was a very forgettable red carpet appearance.

At least the ELLE Style Awards are on tonight (I'm 98% sure the Olsen's will be there) so at least we're safe in the knowledge tonight will bring a more exciting red carpet.
What did you think of the BAFTA red carpet?

Cheryl and Ashley Cole split

Londonon - Chelsea and England footballer Ashley Cole and his pop star wife Cheryl have split, her publicist said on Tuesday, following allegations of his infidelity.

One of Britain's best-known celebrity couples, the Coles wed in 2006 but their relationship has been the subject of frenzied media interest in recent days.

"Cheryl Cole is separating from her husband Ashley Cole," her spokesperson Sundraj Sreenivasan said. "Cheryl asks the media to respect her privacy during this difficult time. We have no further comment to make."

The former Cheryl Tweedy, 26, first found fame as a member of girl band Girls Aloud.

She went on to become a solo recording artist - one hit was titled Fight For This Love - and to become a popular judge on The X-Factor, a television talent show launched in Britain by Simon Cowell.

Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole, 29, had ankle surgery earlier this month but his club manager Carlo Ancelotti expects him to be fit to play in the World Cup which starts in South Africa in June.

Ryan and Abbie split

Ryan Phillippe has lost another blonde bombshell, his girlfriend Abbie Cornish.

Well, Karma's a bitch, ain't it?

Ryan and Abbie hooked up after starring in
Stop/Loss together in 2006. Ryan was still married to the gorgeous, original blonde bombshell, Reese Witherspoon, at the time of filming. While the divorce was officially due to 'irreconcilable difference', there's no doubting Abbie was the third wheel here.

It's a little Mr and Mrs Smith-ish, don't you think?

Abbie was spotted removing her things from their home on Sunday while he was out shopping with his and Reese's kids, Ava and Deacon. Sneaky! Maybe she was pissed he didn't take her shopping.

Abbie reportedly dumped his ass because she suspects he's been cheating. Well, sorry to break it to you honey, but you knew what you were getting into!

So very (or not so very) coincidentally, Reese also pulled the plug on her post-marital relationship wiht Jake Gyllenhaal recently. Do you think they're planning to get back together for the kids? Should they?

We say NO Reese, don't do it!

Grey Matters

Where others find grey drab and boring, I find an odd delight in layering shades of the monochrome color. Marc Jacobs started his show with a mix of greys (knits, tweeds) which soon became the grounding palette for his romantically serious collection. I found it interesting that the mix of ‘real NYC girls’ and unknown models in such soft, neutral colors actually accentuated the his play of proportions and fabrics.

Back to the word “serious” for a minute, I was surprised to see so many skirt suits and 3pc suits on the runway. Ankle socks seemed to emerge as a trend, which surprisingly looked really good with the below-the-knee a-line skirts and culottes. How tall do you need to be to pull this off in real-life? I have the perfect pair of mary janes to test this theory tonight.

NYC: Rodarte Front Row

Marc Jacobs didn't have celebrities on the front row this season, which took him out of the running for the most impressive front row lineup. Rodarte is in with a good chance of winning though; they invited Kirsten, Natalie and Chloe. I think everyone has a girl-crush on at least one of these lovely ladies, no?

From top left: Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman; Natalie Portman; Chloë Sevigny and Humberto Leon; Julia Restoin-Roitfeld; Anna Dello Russo; Derek Blasberg and Jen Brill.

As for the clothes, I liked. I'm a big fan of Rodarte, but this was in no way my favourite collection Laura and Kate have produced. The Rodarte look is well established now (and other designers sneakily take 'inspiration' from them too) so there was nothing too surprise this season.

But then I'm not that great at change anyway. And I loved the dreamy colour palette and angelic white dresses. It was a beautiful collection, and I'm sure Natalie and Kirsten will wear a few pieces between them on the red carpets this year.
