Online shoppers, guard your credit cards. Marc Jacobs launched recently his first-ever e-commerce boutique, and as you might expect, it’s well stocked, nicely designed, and difficult to resist. Men’s and women’s collections from Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc are on offer—proffered by grinning, animated “salespeople”—as well as kids’ clothes from Little Marc and a selection of special items of the only-at-MJ tchotchke variety, like skate decks, charm necklaces, and Jacobs-branded Sharpies.

The World According to Marc

The designer was interviewed by FIT’s Patricia Mears, talked about his retail beginnings as a stock boy, his new apartment in Paris, and the difference between his design process for Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton. We also found out that his first line ever was called Marc & Barbara and it included hand knit sweaters that Bill Cunninghamsubsequently shot on the streets of New York; plus Gianni and Donatella Versace came to his first “Marc Jacobs” show. • Marc got his first fashion job as a stock boy at Charivari.
• Tracy Reese was Marc’s best friend at Parsons.
• Marc Jacobs hired Tom Ford to do Perry Ellis America when he was at the creative helm.
• Marc’s first studio was located at 113 Spring Street.
• His first fashion show was featured on 48 hours; production, building the set and finalizing the details was shown as the amateur contrast to Bill Blass, who was the greatest in American fashion at the time.
• Marc took French lessons at FIAF years ago.
• He prefers briefs to boxers.
• Marc bought his new apartment in Paris from designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac.
• His old dog Tiger died and he got a new bull terrier named Alfred.
• Marc started wearing kilts when he was in a bad mood and his assistant Casey went to Barneys and bought him one from Comme des Garcons. “I love wearing skirts,” he said.

On designing sexy clothing:
“I just don’t find inanimate objects sexy; I don’t find clothes sexy at all…a non-sexy girl in a low cut dress is still a non-sexy girl.”

What Marc would be doing if her weren’t a designer:
“Once I wanted to be a veterinarian….when my cat was sick!”

On who he considers to be the greatest American designer:
“I think Ralph Lauren is the greatest American designer…for he singular vision and voice.”

On going to Paris for the first time:
“The first time is like losing your virginity; even if it’s bad it’s only going to happen once!”

MJs new collection

Marc Jacobs recent collection lets the clothes do the talking (styling aesthetics were parred right back) Marc Jacobs gave us his bare aesthetics in terms of cut and colour.

Grey Matters

Where others find grey drab and boring, I find an odd delight in layering shades of the monochrome color. Marc Jacobs started his show with a mix of greys (knits, tweeds) which soon became the grounding palette for his romantically serious collection. I found it interesting that the mix of ‘real NYC girls’ and unknown models in such soft, neutral colors actually accentuated the his play of proportions and fabrics.

Back to the word “serious” for a minute, I was surprised to see so many skirt suits and 3pc suits on the runway. Ankle socks seemed to emerge as a trend, which surprisingly looked really good with the below-the-knee a-line skirts and culottes. How tall do you need to be to pull this off in real-life? I have the perfect pair of mary janes to test this theory tonight.
