[STYLE INSPIRATION] Carrie Bradshaw for 2012

When I read this post over at Fashion Foie Gras about movies that make you want to reinvent your entire wardrobe and look, I couldn’t help but think of my own “screen moment” that made me want to alter my entire approach to style and fashion. It wasn’t so much a moment, as a character. Carrie Bradshaw. Sure, she’s the style icon who changed many a young woman’s wardrobe, for me that change was profound to say the least. Before Carrie (BC, shall we say!) I wore a uniform of jeans and t-shirts and trainers. After Carrie, I began to add skirts and dresses and colour to my wardrobe. Ok, so I’m still working on the colour element but I have definitely moved in a more girly phase since being introduced to Ms Bradshaw. She was original queen of colour blocking and clashing prints, Carrie Bradshaw inspired girls and women the world over with her outrageous outfits in the hit TV show, Sex and the City. Here, I’ve disected five keys looks from the Carrie-years and how you can wear them today, with finds straight from the high street!
carrie bradshaw style outfit #1: graphic tee
For this look, why not grab one of Uniqlo’s UT tees? Try with the grey Minnie Mouse tee, or add a bit of colour with the yellow tee. Follow Carrie’s lead and add either smarten the look with a blazer, or go wild and add a statement maxi skirt.
carrie bradshaw style outfit #2: colour blocking
For a Carrie-inspired colour blocked look choose a bold tee, in either pink or red or blue and team with a striped skirt, either go safe with a monochrome number from Dorothy Perkins or clash with this pleated skirt by Oasis.
carrie bradshaw look #3: pearls
Pearls and Carrie are synonymous with each other. Pile them on for a real Carrie-look. This multi strand set from Dorothy Perkins is perfect, or this from Oasis. If you’re not so keen on the necklaces, why not grab this pearl bracelet from Warehouse.
carrie bradshaw style outfit #4: floral corsages
Think of Carrie and you’ll likely think of corsages! Wear them either in your hair, or pinned to your top, or tied around your wrist – wherever you choose, make sure they’re big! Any of these would work: pink from Oasisblue from Warehouseyellow from Dorothy Perkins; and burnt cream from DP.
carrie bradshaw look #5: sporty luxe
Sporty luxe is another of this season’s trends that Carrie was working well over a decade ago! Team a luxe sweat (here or here) and a pair of fancy heels, or alternatively choose a slub vest with a mini skirt.
carrie bradshaw look #6: clashing prints
Long before Mary Katrantzou was clashing prints on the catwalks, Carrie Bradshaw was clashing prints on the sidewalks of New York City! Team a floral print skirt with a striped tee, or an animal print skirt with a floral top.
carrie bradshaw look #7: crop tops
Another look Carrie sports a fair bit in the TV series is a crop top. This season they were all over the catwalks and are filling up rail space on the high street too. Whether you dare to bare everything in a bra top, or prefer to only give the illusion with a tie-front blouse, make sure you’re channelling the Carrie-look and choose bold prints or bright colours!
Which TV or movie character has most influenced your style?

[STYLE ICON] Rachel Bilson as Dr Zoe Hart

My latest style icon is actress Rachel Bilson in her latest role as Dr Zoe Hart in the new hit TV show, Hart of Dixie. Have you seen it? No!? Well, go check it out for yourself right now! Bilson’s character manages to combine laid-back cool with a little added sex appeal - a look that every young woman wishes she could pull off with such aplomb!
From the creators of The O.C. and Gossip Girl, Hart Of Dixie stars Rachel Bilson as a sophisticated and ambitious young doctor who has to swap her fast-paced life in New York for the down-home world of Alabama after her perfect plans start to fall apart.
Zoe Hart thinks she has her life sorted – she graduated top of her class from medical school, has the perfect boyfriend and is set on following in her father’s footsteps to become a cardio-thoracic surgeon. But things soon start to go wrong, and Zoe is forced to accept an offer from a stranger, Dr Harley Wilkes, to work with him at his small practice in Bluebell, Alabama.
Bilson’s wardrobe in the show is filled with covetable pieces and great inspiration for the glorious summer sunshine we’re currently enjoying here in the UK, whether you favour a chance to show off your pins in a mini skirt or cover-up in easy-to-wear peg-leg trousers, Bilson shows you how.
If you’ve missed the show, so far, make sure to catch yourself up and watch it on Really – there are still more than 15 episodes left in the debut series and a second series has already been confirmed for the US – so it’ll likely be back on our screens in the UK again next year!
I’m clearly having a “Rachel-Bilson-moment” as my Pinterest boards are currently filled with her! Particularly her dip-dyed hair* (see here).
Who’s your current on screen style icon? For a blast from the past, check out my post earlier this week on how Carrie Bradshaw’s style translates to 2012!

Look at these photos from the Front Row of the Fashion Weeks that have just come to an end, I thought it might be time to recap some of those who have been featured and who made their mark on the Front Row in New York, London, Milan and Paris:

First, Sienna Miller, who was not only making an appearance on the Front Row but also on the catwalk with her collection with sister Savannah, Twenty8Twelve:

Kate Moss has been a regular on the Front Rows since the 1990s and she continues to put her fashion foot forward:

Alexa Chung retains that quintessential English style that she has perfected, even when on the Front Row in another city:

Next up, Olivia Palermo was making waves here, at London Fashion Week and across the pond on the Front Row in New York:

Kiera Knightley, the face of Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle, made an appearance for the brand’s show in Paris:

And finally, last week’s Style Icon Clémence Poésy, here at the Chanel show in Paris:

Tell me, who is your style icon?

I am also looking for bloggers who would like to write a guest post for this series, about their Style Icon, please get in touch if you would like to get involved.

STYLE ICON: ASHLEY OLSEN

Declaring Ashley Olsen as a style icon is pretty obvious, it's like ehhr... stating Ryan Gosling is kinda smoking hot (and so is my old flame Josh Hartnett by the way. Hi there.) Still, I'm kicking in this open door because Ashley has some serious fashion cred - The Row or Elizabeth and James obsessed, anyone? - and her style has been top of the bill for years. One of the girls I'd trade wardrobes with in a heartbeat. Do you feel the same way?

Style trends of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2012: You wear it well

Yes, they had songs. But their style gave the songs an added meaning, a deeper context.

RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS
Guns N' Roses

DONOVAN

The hair, hats, bandannas and scarves. And let us not forget the sock, in the case of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The inductees in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2012 -- Guns N'Roses, Beastie Boys, Laura Nyro, Donovan, Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Small Faces/Faces -- all represent trends in fashion as much as styles of music.

What would GNR be without denim and leather, top hats and bandannas?

The Beasties without their Adidas shoes?

Egads, Rod Stewart without that hair?

Stewart and his rooster mullet are being inducted with the Faces. Along with Keith Richards, the British rockers defined the scruffy look with messy hair and fitted clothes that looked as though they'd been slept in.

The band will be inducted alongside the Small Faces, which morphed into the Faces with the addition of Stewart and guitarist Ronnie Wood.

The Small Faces might be the least known of the Class of 2012, but the mid-1960s mod band's fashion sense would top a Rolling Stone best-of list.

"They spent more money on clothes than they did recording their albums," says Ira Robbins, editor of the rock bible "The Trouser Press Record Guide." "They were a total Carnaby Street band."

The street and its boutiques defined the look and style of Swinging London in the '60s. The Small Faces prided themselves on being the best-dressed band anywhere.

They still are, according to Tom Dechristofaro, singer-guitarist in Cleveland indie-pop band Afternoon Naps.

"The whole mod thing was a crazy influence on me," Dechristofaro says. "It's where music and style and attitude all came together in rock 'n' roll."

Donovan projected the kind of style you might find in Middle-earth.

"He was an elfin creature," says Robbins. "You can't underestimate the power 'The Hobbit' and pagan theology had on people like Donovan."

His fashion sense followed -- complete with paisley shirts and robes adorned with flowers.

"He became a psychedelic fairy with a hippie-dippie gypsy look," says Robbins.

By the '70s, Donovan was out of fashion. He was typecast as last decade's model.

It's a problem that performers, like fashion designers, experience when they define themselves so closely with one style, era or movement.

Abandoning the old to become trendy again is just as risky, says hairstylist and musician Christina Akita.

"The '80s were so bad for rock 'n' roll fashion because you had all these dudes from the '60s and '70s trying to stay current," says Akita. "But they were too out of touch to be cool again."

Akita rates David Bowie and Stewart as having the toughest time making the transition.

"They started doing all these new, crazy things with their hair and clothes, and their music got bland," says Akita. "Like they were trying to appeal to a pop audience who doesn't like rock 'n' roll."

Stewart's forays into '80s and '90s adult contemporary were accompanied by a much spikier mane -- imagine a rooster that had stuck its claw into an electrical outlet.

"He became this schmaltzy crooner and started wearing these pastel-colored suits," says Dechristofaro. "It's pretty cheesy if you're talking about rock fashion, but at least he's still getting supermodels."

Axl Rose shocked fans with his new "style" when he hit the stage in Brazil last fall.

He was performing as Guns N' Roses (he's the sole original member). But he looked nothing like the singer his fans had come to know and love.

It wasn't just that he had ballooned out, or that he barely moved onstage.

There was no bandanna. No leather jacket. No denim.

Instead, Rose concealed himself in a full-length yellow coat, with a black hat and sunglasses.

His outlaw look and style provided the band's songs a different context 25 years ago.

So did his new style -- which gave new meaning to "Appetite for Destruction."

Jessica Alba: She wears it well

Seven months' pregnant Jessica Alba shows how a huge baby bump needn't compromise style.

Attempting to look chic when you're in late pregnancy is a tough call.

Yes, of course, you're beautiful, you're glowing, you are doing something even more important than squeezing into J-Brand's 811 electric blue mid-rise cropped skinny jeans. But unless she's living in a nineteenth century novel - empire line dresses and lying-in chambers? God they had it easy - a pregnant woman still has to go out about her day, possibly go to work and almost definitely get dressed.

In pictures: Stylish summer pregnancies

This week Jessica Alba, due to give birth to her second child in September, has been doing that admirably, showcasing some key mother-to-be fashion skills even in the high summer heat of Los Angeles.

With all the extra pressure of being papped to add to the worrying inability to see her feet, Alba has to work extra hard. But like all fashion triumphs the secret lies with those efforts appearing entirely effortless.

Why being 'with-child' is no obstacle to looking good

In recent days Alba has worn a black maxi skirt, tight white vest and an unbuttoned denim shirt to great effect. This would have looked lovely even if she wasn't pregnant but she wasn't trying to disguise the bump. Alba's success in the picture above, too, (photographed with her daughter Honor Marie) comes with highlighting her new silhouette, in this case by belting a floaty fitting dress under her bust.

A bit of tone-on-tone accessorising keeps the look contemporary, as does layering a loose-fitting knit (or denim shirt) over dress or skirt, (trousers being pretty much an impossible dream by seven months pregnant).

Lastly, as Alba demonstrates so well, the final touch is to up-size your handbag. The unofficial rule? You're looking for an accessory that is bigger than your biggest body part.

Rachel Bilson you are soo cute

Rachel Bilson still manages to not only look like a million bucks, but to dress like one as well.

Seen here, Rachel is wearing a black bejeweled dress. It’s very simple and elegant, and it compliments her skin. The jewels at the neckline bring out her eyes, and her hair is elegantly pulled back into a bun.

She tops off the outfit with some gold chunky bracelets and she couldn’t look more stunning. Rachel has done it again!
And how cute does she look here?

Rachel Bilson’s Summer Style

Rachel Bilson has style all of her own. She knows how to dress every single time, wherever she goes and I can’t say that I’ve seen her in anything horrible. She doesn’t do anything over the top, and she keeps it simple and feminine.

In this picture, (sorry its old ie 2007- but Ilove it) Rachel’s showing off her long legs with this fabulous summer outfit. A pair of tight not-so-short but still short shorts, a white tee, a long sweater over, and a cute pair of shoes with a little heel. Absolutely perfect, in my opinion, and it looks great on her.

These shorts are very easy to work with because they’re not super short, but they’re also not bermudas- they’re in between and that’s what makes them so versatile. Of course, if you’re not too proud of your legs don’t wear tight shorts like that, but instead try something more loose.

The sweater over the outfit gives it a simple, comfy, look. It also makes the outfit look wearable pretty much anywhere, unlike other celebrity outfits.

Her glasses look gorgeous on her, and I like that she added the shell necklace as an accessory, it goes very well with the whole look.rachel-bilson-legs.jpg
