Chicago’s Coolest 80-Year-Old Reveals Her Beauty and Style Secrets

Meet Mamie Walton, local philanthropist, British import, and hands-down the coolest and most stylish 80-year-old we've ever met. We fell hard for Mamie for a million reasons, most notably her warm, positive personality and undeniable grace and style. We can only attempt to follow in her flawless footsteps, so to point us in the right direction Mamie shared her secrets for staying beautiful and maintaining stunning style at every single age. You'll have nothing but respect for this O.G. (Original + Gorgeous) once you learn how she's stayed this stunning into her 80s. These timeless tips from a master are ones you can't live without.

Beauty
1. Exercise. Mamie, a former dancer, is a firm believer in the benefits of exercise, and has always kept in shape. "Exercise is so important, it's kept me around for a great many years." She devotes at least an hour a day to exercise. "I spend at least 30 minutes each day at the ballet barre, and I use, you know, the Chinese Wand."

2. Skincare. "I'm very particular about my skin." Mamie was a fan of Erno Laszlo for 25 years, but eventually moved on to products from La Prairie, and her current favorite, from Dr. Ivo Pitanguy. "Specifics is his line, I just love it."

3. Positivity. "I am a very positive person." Mamie's positivity and bright personality were evident in our interview, and this tip came as no surprise. "My mother would say, 'Always have a smile,' I believe that positivity and showing interest in other people helps you look better."

Street Style

Who she is: Kristine
Where we spotted her: On our way home from a street fair.
Why we love her: Kristine has officially rekindled our love of wide-legged pants. She's smartly belted them and added big-time accessories to make sure they don't swallow her up! We wonder if that camera of hers was taking street-style shots, too?

Brightly coloured pants

Don't think we're doodling in those notebooks we keep out during runway shows—they're filled to the binding with trend notes and observations. And don't think we're flipping through all the fall fashion show images online for sheer pleasure—we're cataloging them, grouping them, and filing them. As for our sleeping schedules? Not important—as long as we've compiled the ultimate list of fall '11 trends that are actually relevant to you. From the color you're going to be stocking up on to new takes on old favorites that'll have you looking at your wardrobe in a whole new way, here are the 2011 fall trends you'll be seeing everywhere very soon.

Brightly Colored Pants

Whether they were cropped, flared, tapered, or high-waisted, the hottest shapes of the season also came in super-saturated hues, perfectly for punching up the clean silhouettes for fall.

We Love Topshop - Lookbook

Count on Topshop to instantly take to the big runway trends like viruses to their host cells, if you will.Regardless, if you're looking for Balmain's sequined minidresses, Dolce's big, shaggy "fur" coats,Rodarte's shredded knits, and, of course, those stellar thigh-high boots (somehow looks suspiciously amazing on the model...but we won't believe it 'til we see it in person!) at decent prices, Topshop will be your mecca this fall. The lookbook even has a little homage to New York with a section called "Manhattan Cocktail," which is a hodge-podge of going-out looks. Meanwhile, the "Highland Fling" section features that kind of rugged, bundled-up cool Opening Ceremony also copped in their fall lookbook. Finally, we're seeing another Edie Sedgwick revival in the leopard-print, brocade minidresses, and heavily-rimmed eyes. But then again, when isn't there one of those? More looks after the jump....

At the 2011 ARISE Magazine Fashion Week in Lagos, Tanzanian model Millen Magese opened the JBL show with a dramatic strut down the runway. Therefore, it is no surprise that the model takes on the starring role in the lookbook for Jewel by Lisa’s Autumn/Winter 2012 collection.

For the lookbook, the collection has been edited and we are presented with the most showstopping pieces. While the recent J Label diffusion line is targeted at “the girl next door”, this collection is for the “girl on tour”, with the sequined drainpipe pants and lots of prints paired with prints, this collection will unleash your inner rock chick!

Fancy Pants

The tuxedo is the smart way to dress up - and hide those knobbly knees, says Hilary Alexander.

Tuxedos in pictures

Knobbly, wobbly, or cobbled together with the scars of a hundred childhood bike-rides which ended in disaster (as are mine), they are one of the least attractive parts of the body, unless, of course, you happen to have a pair of perfect patellas, such as those which intersect the enviable pins of the Duchess of Cambridge.

"Coco" Chanel, wasn't fond of knees; she looked upon them with distaste, decreed 'the perfect skirt' would always cover the bony abominations, and was the first women to wear trousers in public. (Karl Lagerfeld, incidentally, in his haute couture collection for Chanel, earlier this month, paid homage to the legacy by insisting all his models wore over-the-knee boots in satin or leather, veiled in chiffon and tulle).

The tux is about style, not fashion

All great news for women with a mild form of 'genuphobia', since trousers have emerged as the heroes of the new-modern wardrobe.

Wide or second-skin skinny, flared or fitted, cropped or over-the-ankle, trousers are the ultimate anti-knee champions, flattering and fashionable, and, not to mention, way more functional and practical than a maxi-skirt.

Their return to the frontline of the fashionscape, has prompted a re-think of the working wardrobe, as well as a revival in the way we address trousers for evening.

The 'tuxedo', a la Yves Saint Laurent's 1966 'le smoking', has, of course, long been one of the usual suspects on the party circuit and red carpet, favoured by every celebrity from Bianca Jagger, Julie Andrews and Catherine Deneuve, to Naomi Watts, Mary-Kate Olsen and Eva Mendes, and has remained impervious even to the nonsensical ban imposed by the dress code-dinosaurs at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

But tuxedo-dressing has been given an update by way of the 1970's revival in general, Tom Ford's glam take on the tux, and Marc Jacobs' fascination with one of his "fave" inspirations, YSL.

Jacobs, unlike Ford, eschewed the classic black, in favour of satin 'le smokings' in the mouthwatering colours of a Ladurée macaroon.

Designers as diverse as Donna Karan, Ashish, Balmain, and Dries Van Noten have merged the Saint Laurent look with glam-rock, via glitzy DJ-jackets and/or trousers which, far from being relics of 'the decade taste forgot', have a new lease of life because of loose-cut, 'boyfriend' tailoring. And bargain-hunters will find luxe labels like these a little more purse-friendly in the July sales.

Create your own DIY tuxedo-style by putting a bling-bling jacket with plain black trousers or jeans, or vice versa, a tailored jacket with Dorothy Perkins' sequined strides, (as photographed); Markus Lupfer's gold, sequined stretch trousers, down from £350 to £175, at theoutnet.com; or the Moto bronze foil, snakeprint jeans, £60, at Topshop.

Then, put on the glam-rock 'n' roll Ritz with Alber Elbaz's favourite tux-cessory - a floppy bow-tie.

Jessica Alba: She wears it well

Seven months' pregnant Jessica Alba shows how a huge baby bump needn't compromise style.

Attempting to look chic when you're in late pregnancy is a tough call.

Yes, of course, you're beautiful, you're glowing, you are doing something even more important than squeezing into J-Brand's 811 electric blue mid-rise cropped skinny jeans. But unless she's living in a nineteenth century novel - empire line dresses and lying-in chambers? God they had it easy - a pregnant woman still has to go out about her day, possibly go to work and almost definitely get dressed.

In pictures: Stylish summer pregnancies

This week Jessica Alba, due to give birth to her second child in September, has been doing that admirably, showcasing some key mother-to-be fashion skills even in the high summer heat of Los Angeles.

With all the extra pressure of being papped to add to the worrying inability to see her feet, Alba has to work extra hard. But like all fashion triumphs the secret lies with those efforts appearing entirely effortless.

Why being 'with-child' is no obstacle to looking good

In recent days Alba has worn a black maxi skirt, tight white vest and an unbuttoned denim shirt to great effect. This would have looked lovely even if she wasn't pregnant but she wasn't trying to disguise the bump. Alba's success in the picture above, too, (photographed with her daughter Honor Marie) comes with highlighting her new silhouette, in this case by belting a floaty fitting dress under her bust.

A bit of tone-on-tone accessorising keeps the look contemporary, as does layering a loose-fitting knit (or denim shirt) over dress or skirt, (trousers being pretty much an impossible dream by seven months pregnant).

Lastly, as Alba demonstrates so well, the final touch is to up-size your handbag. The unofficial rule? You're looking for an accessory that is bigger than your biggest body part.
