Traveling light: Fashion tips and how to pack

Summer vacation season has finally arrived and with it, the decisions on what to take with you as you're off enjoying some relaxing time in the sun.

Often, there is not enough space to take all the clothes you think you might need, whether there's no room in your cramped car trunk or you're trying to save money on luggage fees at the airport.

But have no fear. Shannon Schroeder, a Tulsa fashion expert, has some advice on traveling light yet always having something appropriate to wear. The key: versatile pieces that can be re-worn and fashioned into several looks.

"Try to stick with basics," Schroeder said.

For most of your clothing items, choose neutral colors. Black, white and khaki are good colors for staple items, and flashes of color can be brought in with shoes, purses and accessories.

"You could transform any outfit with accessories," Schroeder said.

Schroeder also suggests using beauty products to make your look pop. A manicure and pedicure, or bright lipstick, will add needed color for what could otherwise be a dull look.

And she says although most of your wardrobe should be basics, you can allow yourself a few standout pieces, such as a colored blouse or colored pair of jeans, which are "very in" right now.

The following are some versatile items that Schroeder recommends.

Dresses

"One of my favorite pieces to wear is a maxi dress," Schroeder said.

For a daytime look, add a fedora and flip-flops. To dress it up, slip on a nice pair of sandals and some accessories.

The same dress can also double as a coverup, she said.

All the same tips can apply to a simple white dress, Schroeder said.

Tops

A black tank top is essential. It can be worn with a pair of colored statement jeans or layered under a blouse.

And speaking of blouses, Schroeder recommends a long-sleeve or three-quarter sleeve one, preferably in a trendy print.

"If you do a blouse in a sheer fabric, it will be cool enough for summer," she said.

And it can be paired with shorts, jeans or a skirt.

Bags

When it comes to bags, you'll probably need only a couple, Schroeder said. A small clutch to dress up an outfit, and a bigger, crossover bag for daytime and when you have more things to carry around.

Shoes

As for shoes, only take one in each "category," Schroeder said.

Her recommendations include a flip-flop in a bold color, metallic sandals, beaded flip-flops, and a wedge espadrille.

Her final tip: Leave the stilettos at home.

"Summer is the time to give your feet a break. A sandal or wedges will still give you the height and the glamour without the spiked heel."

Packing Tips - Pack Your Suitcase to Thwart Wrinkled Clothes

Roll 'em! Rolling your clothes will help reduce wrinkling.

Here's how I packs, and I'm darn good at making the clothes wrinkle resistant. Take a shirt, in this case a fairly heavy long sleeve shirt, and lay a tee shirt over it. Then roll them both up together in a fairly tight roll.

The principle here is simple: by rolling our clothes we're creasing them less right from the start. We're creating a radius bend and we expect the fabric to recover from such gentle handling with just a bit of shaking out. It works. Try it.

How to Pack for a Stay in the Kruger National Park

A stay for a few night in the Kruger Park in South Africa requires careful planning. The Park will never disappoint the visitor and this list should help you to be prepared for a memorable stay!

1. Make sure you book well in advance as you can only stay in the Kruger Park overnight if you already have a booking. This is easy to do through the Kruger Park central reservations office.
2. Find out whether the camp you have booked in at has a restaurant, shop or is a bush camp with neither of these facilities. If your camp does not have a shop or restaurant make sure you take food for your stay.
3. Buy a map of the Kruger Park so you can plan your route carefully.
4. Make sure your vehicle is full of fuel before you depart.
5. Pack the following: charcoal, firelighters, matches, corkscrew and bottle-opener & food and drink ( including alcohol!)
6. Take your own water as the water at the camps is not drinkable.
7. Pack your digital camera and the charger.
8. Take a pair of binoculars for each person and identification books!
9. Pack toiletries including loo roll!
10. Take torches as the camps are dark at night.
11. Pack cool clothes for the day - neutral safari colours are best. Several layers are a great idea as it is cod in the early morning but soon gets very hot.
12. Take a fleecey with you for the evenings as they can be cold during the South African winter months.
13. Wear strong boots if you intend to go on a walking safari with a guide.
14. Take a hat to keep your head cool and for use at sunset when the sun is very low in the sky.
15. Take a good mosquito repellent, we use Bug Geroff products which was developed for use in the Kruger Park.
16. Take prophylactics to guard you against malaria if appropriate.
17. Take a basic first aid kit which contains tablets for upset stomachs!

Tips:

• Try to use products that the local use as they are made for that type of terrain, Rogue hats , boots & bags and Bug Geroff insect repellent are great options.
• Speak to the local pharmacist in the area about anti-malarial prophylactics, they will be able to advise you whether they are needed and which ones the locals use.
• To recharge cameras etc. pack a block extension lead with a South African plug on the end so you can always charge your UK devices!

Warning:

• Do not get out of your car in the Kruger Park except in designated areas!

8. Waterproof Makeup:

Look fly by the poolside in products that won’t smudge with a splash of water or sweat

I hate checking bags, so have invested in colorful yet compact luggage that can fit all my essentials and pop into an overhead compartment:
